When Mart Verstappen settled in New Zealand in 1982, he brought with him strong "hands-on" experience in the art of propagation from Holland. His practical skills, honed in stone and pip fruit, and ornamentals in his home country, helped Marlborough's Cloudy Bay Vineyard to success. He established the Cloudy Bay nursery in 1990, which he managed for 11 years until he joined Corbans Viticulture as Technical Manager. Throughout this period, he was an active member of the New Zealand Grape Vine Improvement.

He is regarded as one of the industry's leading specialists on the best rootstocks to optimise yield.

Mart has extensive knowledge of all aspects of New Zealand cool climate viticulture and has a special interest and expertise in ampelography. Based in Marlborough, Mart is the "Johnny on the spot" when it comes to providing viticulture advice to customers.

"My work is at the 'grass-roots' level - advising clients on the most suitable rootstock to use and assessing the suitability of a potential site for development. I assist in ensuring the best viticulture decisions are made to enable long-term viability of our clients vineyards."
