Technical consultancy

Our Technical Consultancy service uses Geographical Positioning Systems (GPS) for mapping and a range of the latest technologies to pinpoint the best sites on your land.

The core of our Technical Consultancy is Geographical Information Systems (GIS) and the resources of Frontier Global, New Zealand's leading specialist in land care and management mapping.

Key services
  • Electro-Magnetic Induction (EMI) Surveys

An EMI survey provides a snapshot of the soil profile and variation across a site, helping to determine critical growth factors, such as the capacity for each major soil zone to hold and transport water and minerals.

  • Multi-Spectral Imaging (MSI)

MSI is used for vegetation profiling and mapping, using specialised cameras that measure the light penetration of plant cells. Factors such as canopy density, sugar levels, poor vine growth, nutrient and/or disease problems, and irrigation can be highlighted.

Corbans Viticulture is the sole user of MSI technology in New Zealand through its exclusive arrangement with Specterra, Australia’s leading provider of airborne remote sensing imagery.

  • Cartography

Our technology converts data from your site into a variety of map types, including block, row, and plant layouts, placement and infrastructure detail as well as accurate distance and area measurements.

  • Satellite Imaging

We offer a satellite imaging service and can request a satellite “fly-over” of your property enabling high quality images to be taken.

  • 3D Computer Modelling

Computer modelling provides rotatable, three-dimensional depictions to optimise your planting layout, and to take you or potential investors or buyers on a virtual tour.

  • Regional Mapping

Our regional mapping service provides vineyard maps by district, region or country.

Service application

Our Technical Consultancy services can be applied at any stage of vineyard preparation; from site selection and vineyard planning, to developing your vineyard, or maintaining an already established vineyard.

Site selection

An EMI survey is an excellent tool for site selection to determine:

  • Soil profile at various depths
  • Different viticulture management zones
  • Areas of promise or potential concern
  • Identify where remedial work may be needed

EMI data allows us to:

  • Generate a contour map and determine the total area of plantable land
  • Supply software files to irrigation design and earthwork contractors, helping to reduce development costs
  • Assist in the design of irrigation, drainage and frost protection systems
Vineyard mapping

Detailed mapping will assist infrastructure design specialists and provide an accurate template of your plantable area. Precise contours help locate areas susceptible to frost, draining and ponding. These maps are also an indispensable marketing and management tool.

Vineyard design

The collection of on-site data (either through an EMI survey, or mapping work) allows an accurate "mock-up" of a virtual vineyard. This enables you to easily make design changes before work begins on-site.

Detail may include:

  • Individual and total row lengths
  • Quantity of wire, posts, plants and irrigation required
  • Size of blocks to be planted
  • Hazardous areas
Vineyard layout & resource requirements

Row length, spacing and other features are located using Trimble RTK technology, to ensure optimum use of materials in the vineyard. In addition to saving you time and money, this level of accuracy ensures an exact layout for ripping and row alignment.

Post-establishment services

Once the vineyard is established, an EMI survey is a useful tool for identifying variability throughout the vineyard. A MSI survey, however, provides a better understanding of any issues above the ground, enabling you to take corrective steps. MSI data can be superimposed on any existing images to allow contours, irrigation and wind flow patterns to be taken into consideration.
