Corbans Viticulture is an industry leader in providing high health grapevines. We will continue to lead the industry through ongoing implementation of innovative sustainable practices, and the adoption of robust, international quality assurance standards.
Our Viticulture Consultants work closely with our Technical Consultants. Using data gathered at your site, they will recommend the best rootstock for your site and our nursery will supply you with the highest health grapevines available.
In 2007, the company was one of the first grape propagation nurseries in New Zealand to adopt the Grafted Grapevine Standard (GGS). We are also the first nursery to become accredited by Sustainable Winegrowers New Zealand (SWNZ), and to participate in the carboNZero programme. Our ISO 9001:2000 certification covers all our quality management systems for the production of dormant grafted grapevines.
The supply of high health, grafted grapevines is our nursery's core business. Our success is highly dependent on an ongoing regime of activities both in the nursery and at the laboratory which include:
-
Ampelography (true-to-type)
Ampelographic techniques are applied to verfiy that all mother vines of rootstock and budwood are true-to-type. With this rigorous process a high level of confidence can be given to confirm that the provenance of the plants are known and accurate.
-
Elisa and PCR Testing
All our propagation source material is Elisa tested for GLRaV Type 3 each year. Corbans Viticulture has established high health rootstock blocks from selected mother vines. One of the selection criteria is a negative test for 12 viruses by PCR. The monitoring of all source blocks by Elisa and PCR testing is ongoing.
-
Physical Specifications
All our grafted grapevines must comply with a set of physical specifications that are reviewed every year.
-
Barcoding
Barcoding is an essential element in our traceability and quality management systems. It enables us to track and troubleshoot any future issues and provides information on:
- Budwood, rootstock source, virus-testing and harvesting data
- Production treatments before grafting
- All relevant grafting information
- Nursery and grading data
- Despatch data
We closely monitor international wine market trends to ensure we can provide the right varieties and clones.
We graft a selected number of commonly planted varieties including:
- Chardonnay
- Pinot Gris
- Riesling
- Sauvignon Blanc
- Viognier
- Pinot Noir
- Syrah
We are able to graft alternative varieties such as Arneis, Carmenere, Dolcetto, Gruner Veltliner, Nebbiolo, Sangiovese, Tannat and Tempranillo on request.
Ongoing research and innovation ensures continuous evaluation of new and current varieties, and clones best suited to New Zealand's wine-growing conditions.
